Coorg and Kerala Flood Relief

Like many other Indians, we at Reaching Hand, were deeply disturbed by the extent of damage caused by floods that hit Karnataka and Kerala in 2018, destroying homes, livelihood and an alarming number of people lost their lives. But what truly surprised not just our nation, but the entire world, was the support that came rushing in to help the flood affected families.

Our team carried out extensive immediate flood relief work and continued to support the most badly affected families for months after the immediate impact of the floods. We were able to make a significant difference by helping the victims get back on their feet and restart their lives after the calamity.

Reaching Hand supported over 2000 families during the period. Here’s a brief on the work we did for the flood-affected victims in Kerala and Coorg.

Stage 1: Immediate Relief

In the first phase, we directed our efforts towards providing for the most essential needs of the victims with Immediate Disaster Relief Kits with materials like food, basic clothing to immediately change into, toiletries and bedding to sleep on in the temporary camps created in schools to house victims. These distribution activities were carried out initially in Wayanad, supporting 380 families.

In the second phase of our efforts, we extended our efforts to two additional districts of Ernakulam and Paravur. We distributed Family Relief Kits – containing non-perishable food items, clothings, and toiletries across 5 villages in North Paravur (800 families) and 2 villages (102 families) in the Ernakulam district.

Stage 2: Rehabilitation – (Phase 1 – Clean up & Repairs)

Once the immediate needs of the people were met, we tried to figure out how we could help these families get back to their homes. In this phase, the first thing we did was provide cleaning materials to help the families clear up their home of the residue muck, debris and water left behind after the floods. We distributed “Starter Kits” which contained home utensils, toilet accessories, school kits, medical kits and basic clothing.

After the initial assessment of damage caused, we also helped with rebuilding homes that were badly damaged with electric repairs and painting works. Many volunteers came in as manpower support. We also continued to provide non-perishable food so the families could focus on getting their homes back to normalcy.

We carried out these activities in Ernakulam (211 families) Pathanmthitta (21 families) Alapuzha (7 families) Idukki (10 families) and Coorg (150 families).

 Stage 2: Rehabilitation – (Phase 2 – Sustainable Livelihood)

Once the homes were cleared of debris and the essential repairs were done to make the homes livable again, we saw a greater need. The families were in deep despair because most of their crops and other sources of income were destroyed with the flood. These families were unsure how they would sustain themselves after the immediate support of food and clothing stopped from various NGOs?

After thorough assessment, we set off to help families stabilize and get back on their feet again. We supported 200 families in Wayanad, providing them Cattle (Rs 10,000/ calf + cattle feed) so they could earn a living. In North Paravur, we supported 100 families to establish a foundation for Organic Farming (Rs 15,000/ family). In Kavalangad Panchayat and Neriamangalam we helped reconstruct 10 Houses (Rs 2 lakh/ house) and distributed Rehabilitations Kits to 150 families (Rs 10,000/ kit)

Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund

Apart from the above, our organisation also raised funds to hand over a cheque for Rs. 20 lakhs towards the CM’s Disaster Relief Fund.

We were humbled by the generous contributions made by people from all across the country to help the flood victims – both, in the form of monetary donations and in kind.
