Making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children

LIGHTHOUSE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

The Lighthouse International Academy started with an intention to provide schooling for the children at our group foster home on the New Home Campus, a project of Reaching Hand. We observed that the children admitted to our home come from severely deprived backgrounds and therefore they do not have the capacity to join mainstream education.  We recognised that they need personalized and specialized teaching efforts. In order to bridge this gap, we decided to embark on a journey that can change the course of life for these children.

New Home campus is surrounded by numerous villages between Bagalur and Budigere  that have many  village children who are lacking in access to quality education. Recognizing this educational need, we made it our goal to provide the school services to the children of the nearby villages with the hope to rear young dignified citizens by giving access to world class learning environment and opportunities for development of their skills.

Our Goal

The school currently has 101 students. In the forthcoming academic year, we plan to take the number to 150, which will include students from the local communities. The infrastructure can be further scaled to hold 500 students, which is one of our long-term school goals.  Our desire is to make it free for all those cannot afford and the educational standard at par with any schools in Bangalore.

The syllabus followed by the school is NIOS, which follows a home-schooling module. We proudly enhance the education with a three-language model of Kannada, English, and Hindi, and we are working towards using the IGCSE (Cambridge) syllabus in the future.

The School will employ the following methods of teaching:

  • Low student to teacher ratio: Though the number of sections can be enhanced, we will work with an average of twenty students per class. This will ensure each child gets individual attention.
  • Project-oriented classes: Each subject/topic will be approached like a project. We believe this learning mechanism will enable students to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and variety of skills.
  • Flexibility: As a community-based organization, we have the opportunity to explore issues that may not be part of the standard school curriculum. We will intentionally pursue the holistic approach to a student’s growth.
  • Technological soundness: Technological literacy is going to be an important goal of the school. We believe that technology is a powerful enabling tool that can support critical thinking and other developmental skills.
  • Caring corporate partnerships: Our corporate partnerships have provided us with volunteer teachers from time to time. Interactions with professionals give our students an understanding of the world outside and help them shape their dreams.
