Average life expectancy of people in Kerala is now 74.9 years. The percentage of aged persons has been steadily increasing and the problems faced by them too are numerous. Many factors have contributed to the alienation of elders in India.

• Migration of young couples from the rural areas to cities in search of better employment opportunities to fend for themselves.
• Elders who have been in control of the household for a long time are unwilling to give up the responsibility to their children.
• Youngsters, on their part, are sometimes resentful of the attitude of their parents.
• Many youngsters have moved to places far away from their native homes and, in the recent past, to many countries abroad. So even if they want to, they cannot accommodate their parents in their own homes.
• Elders are sometimes too incapacitated or unwell to look after themselves or get medical care especially in an emergency.

The state of Kerala is at the forefront of development in comparison with the rest of the states of India.  It has a good track record of social development indices, especially in respect to health and education departments.  This state is on a launchpad to experience a large scale demographic transformation with a significant rise in the population of aged in the total,  in the context of a declining population growth rate.

• The total population of Kerala as per the 2011 census is around 3.36 crore, of which 12.6 % are above 60 years of age.
• The elderly population in the state of Kerala is growing at a consistent rate of 2.3 %. The rate of population growth is significantly high within the age range of 70 to 80 and above.
• If this growth rate in the above mentioned age category continues to rise, then the proportion of young and old will cross over  in between 2021 and 2031.
• As the number and proportion of older persons are growing faster than any other age group, there are concerns on the accommodation capacities of society to address challenges associated with these demographic shifts.
• Kerala adds one million elderly every successive year since the Census of 1981.
• A major disability identified among the age group of 80 plus was vision problem and those belong to 60-69 years have shown the highest incidence of diabetes. Besides, more than 50 per cent of all age groups of elderly suffer from high blood pressure.

The home caters to the needs of providing shelter, clothing, food, medical attention, spiritual and emotional support to 30 elderly. These elderly shall be picked up from their respective location to provide shelter and care till their last breath. Admission is restricted to aged persons of approximately 50 years of age and above, and in special cases (mentally retarded) younger persons shall be admitted in this home.

The elder home will accommodate members based on their physical disability and gender. It has separate facilities for gentlemen and ladies. The members who can walkambulate comfortablt and do their regular day to day chores shall reside in a separate location within the building and use the common amenities like restrooms, dining facility, pantry etc. for their regular activities.

Members who are unable to ambulate without some assistance to do their regular chores  will stay in the special room generally called Special Care room. These members will receive special care and attention so that their needs are met with excellence within the capacity of the team and the facility.

Members with mental challenges  will be placed under special care facility tailor made for these challenges.

The members who are dependent will be transported with assistance from the sick room with the assistance of wheel-chairs to the common facilities and other venues under the assistance home care nurses and specially trained attendants. We will focus not just on the physical needs, but even on providing the required emotional aspect though intentional relationship building with staff and volunteer teams. them.

REACHING HAND focus is to provide a dignified life for underprivileged people through this project. The home will be equipped with all the features and facilities including  recreational facilities, store, library, prayer chamber, doctor’s chamber with emergency care, open air space, apart from the regular features like a well equipped dining, living, kitchen and other normal facilities. In view of the above, there is, therefore, a huge demand for Old Age Homes which inhabit elderly in a positive environment, environment where people of old age feel comfortable to pursue their hobbies, share thoughts and ideas with like-minded people and enjoy similar ventures of interest. They are places where geriatric population resides to retire from hectic routine life in an environment where the ambience is peaceful, healthy and leisurely. It is home to extremely ill and outstandingly healthy, extraordinarily poor and rich, unacceptable old peoples to lovable elders. Here resides, people of every genre, cast, creed, socio-economic belief, religious community, political belief, etc.
