According to National Sample Survey Organization data of 2007-2008 we see that migration in Karnataka is 38%. According to a 2011 Census data, it shows that 30% of the State’s population live in urban centres. While by itself migration isn’t bad, most of the migration is considered to be distress type. With recurrent droughts, agricultural production in Karnataka state is significantly affect. The Government of Karnataka has declared 23 out of 30 districts as drought hit, due to deficient rainfall in monsoon season in the year 2018. This has a direct fall out in this year -2019, as young and middle-aged men and women are heading to Bengaluru and other urban centres in search of jobs. In Greater Bangalore, with its population of 8 million, 30 percent constitute the rural poor who live in more than a thousand slums. Youth from the city and those living in the periphery lack appropriate skills and suffer from frustration due to lack of employment. They end up with addictions or involving in illegal activities.
We also conducted a situation analysis study during 2016 with regards to the current problems faced by youth in rural and urban Bangalore and other rural parts of Karnataka, to get a close view of employment opportunities for these youth as they are unskilled and find difficult to work in any job sectors. The findings from the need based assessment was that majority of the youth lack skills and therefore are struggling hard to excel in their career. In order to close the gap, Reaching Hand established the skill training and placement program for youths in Bangalore Urban and Rural. The Pratishtha team tries to fulfil the requirement of these youths during their enrolment to our training centre through counselling. During mobilization process, we identify the area of interest these youth would like to work. We train them and help them to get employed in suitable jobs in various sectors like retail, tele-marketing, automobile, teaching etc. The placement is based on their geographical and demographic profile and the job opportunities available for these youths according to their qualification, skills and demand of job in their surroundings.
The Opportunity: The skills-related training provided by Reaching Hand is outcome-focused and linked to jobs directly. The syllabus for each course is formed in partnership with corporate partners like Quest-alliance, BOSCH for computer courses related to retail industry, Bimal Maruti for driving, beauty and other wellness industry for beauty courses, Graphic Design and IT (hardware and networking) training by Reaching Hand, so that the training is done according to the standards set by employers. The placement program seeks to ensure that students are employed once they finish their training. In addition to being outcome oriented, Pratishtha skill training program is special because it provides training beyond industry specific courses. The courses are supplemented with lessons in soft skills, personality development, digital literacy, and basic english to ensure sustained success along with personal and professional growth.
Project Plan: 2 training centre (1 Bangalore + 1 Hosur) and the skill sets are Customer Relation Management (CRM), Graphic Design (CorelDraw & Photoshop) and IT training (Hardware & Networking) for 270 youths.
Projects implemented: In the last four years of our experience working with the underprivileged and marginalized youth, Reaching Hand’s “Pratishtha” program (meaning prestige in Kannada), has trained nearly 761 youth (men and women) in contemporary skills and has successfully employed these trainees in the retail sector, driving schools, beauty salon, DTP centres, hardware businesses. About 20% of them ventured to have their own enterprises. The project endeavours to draw experience from this, to provide these youth from rural and urban Bangalore in retail & computer skills, graphic design, hardware & networking, beautician and four-wheeler driving and helped them find satisfactory employment in the growing market and opportunities that Bangalore and other urban centres (closer to the villages and small towns from which these youth come) provide.
