Bhavana’s story is very unique. After the death of her parents, she was taken in by a woman the family knew in Bangalore. Instead of sending her to school, she was kept at home as a servant. CWC was able to bring her to New Home (where her younger sister already lived) when she was 13 years old. When she arrived, she was completely illiterate in any language. We enrolled her in the National Institute of Open School and slowly helped her develop her academic skills. She now reads and writes in English, Kannada, and Hindi! Bhavana had the opportunity to do a One-year Certificate course in Tailoring approved by the Govt. of Karnataka. She moved out of New Home home in 2018. and began working in Reaching Hand’s vocational training center (Pratishtha) as a trainer. In 2019, she passed her NIOS 10th Board exams and is now enrolled in her 12th NIOS Board Exams. She will continue to study as she works and completes her 12th over the next few years.
